Theory

Definition, values and management of biodiversity. Biodiversity in time (evolution and dynamics at geological, historical and ecological scales: speciation, extinction, succession) and space (distribution patterns, diverse biodiversity factors). Mapping biodiversity. History of nature and biodiversity conservation. Supportive theory (biogeographical, ecological) for the design of protected areas – island biogeography (patterns of formation and evolution of island communities, evolutionary trends in island biota). Selection and planning of nature protection areas: background, criteria, priorities, tools (complementarity, gap analysis), process. Design of Protected Areas and Networks: Principles and Methods. The institutional framework for nature and biodiversity conservation (national, EU, and international legislation, NATURA 2000 Network). Management of protected areas (principles, examples, monitoring). In-use methods for biodiversity conservation (in situ, ex situ, re-introduction of species).
