The course provides extensive practice of core skills required in the real world of business and tourism. Students will improve their listening skills through systematic listening practice on business and tourism themes linked to short printed texts, which allow for vocabulary development and increased reading competence;they will also learn techniques empowering them to be effective listeners in real life situations.
Students are also introduced to the genre of business writing, including the business letter, the business report, the business plan, the business email, minute writing, memo writing and promotional materials development. Speaking skills are practiced through class discussion,which is conducted strictly in English, and they are enhanced through the introduction to presentation techniques, interview strategies, chairing a meeting approaches, tonality techniques and business etiquette discourse.
The instructional materials include a textbook as well as audio and visual materials. Students are assessed by written examination ,though active participation may count towards the final grade. The competency level required of the course is B2 to C1. The examinable component comprises:(a) the textbook and (b) the audio-visual material presented in class sessions.
The course textbook is: CAREER PATHS Tourism by Express Publishing (Eighth Impression 2020).
STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO REGISTER AND ACTIVELY ENGAGE IN THIS COURSE AS ITS REAL BUSINESS ENGLISH APPROACH AND SYLLABUS WILL HONE THEIR COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND THEIR OVERALL COMPETENCY IN ENGLISH.
