(MAR-PPS574) -  Anastasia Patera

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

At theoretical level: introduction to fundamental MSP concepts, examination of regional, national, European and international policies and legal aspects of MSP for Protection & Conservation in the Oceans (e.g. Convention on Biological Diversity – CBD, 1992, Barcelona convention, 1995 - Integrated Coastal Zone Management, Specially Protected Areas and Biological Diversity Protocols,  Habitats and Species Directive - 92/43/EEC,  Marine Strategy Framework Directive 2008/56/EEC, Maritime Spatial Planning Directive - 2014/89/EU), understanding of the spatial and temporal patterns of biodiversity and habitats, use of the coastal/marine space and the relevant human connections, threats related to anthropogenic activities (e.g. Habitat loss and degradation, Over-exploitation of biological resources, pollution, climate change, over-tourism) and tools for integrated and rational management, principles of marine zoning for establishment of Marine Protected Areas, data collection techniques and storage in geodatabases in a Geographic Information System environment, assessment of synergies and conflicts of activities in marine space, assessment of potential multi-use areas, tools and strategies for conflicts’ resolution and decision-making processes towards an adaptive and integrated approach that promotes the participatory process, stakeholders’ participation and public involvement using advanced web-based spatial tools, relevant case studies of MSP applications at various scales with an emphasis on case studies from the Hellenic Seas and the Mediterranean future trends in MSP considering climate change and sustainable blue economy.

At practical level: implementation of MSP principles using geospatial technologies and relevant methodologies, development of relevant geodatabases mapping of ecological elements and data related to anthropogenic activities, critical analysis of specific MSP case studies (on a regional scale - e.g. National Marine Parks – NMPZ, NMPANS, national scale – Aegean and Ionian Seas, and international scale – Mediterranean Sea), use of conventional and web-based GIS tools and techniques for visualizing and processing spatial data, application of several case studies such as spatial planning of renewable energy installations, delineation of areas of organized development of aquaculture activities, areas of particular importance based on cultural heritage, natural beauty, biodiversity, biological conservation and elaboration on methods for involving stakeholders and the wider public using advanced web spatial tools.
