Περιγραφή Μαθήματος
The prime objective of this course is to enable the students to use the English language as a functional means of communication both in social and professional environments, but also as a tool for creative research and constructive scientific work. Further practice and familiarization with the language, both in its written and spoken forms is sought.
The main focus is on familiarizing students with terminology related to the broader field of Design Engineering. For this purpose educational books on terminology are used, together with authentic printed material, such as scientific articles, surveys, newspaper articles, etc.
ASSESSMENT/GRADING METHODS:
Final written examination at the end of the semester or in September
Students who have covered a minimum of 85% of attendance combined with active participation in class activities and tasks, as well as accomplishment of all assignments set, such as oral presentations, essays, etc. can pass the course without sitting the final exam on condition that:
- a) They have successfully completed the “English Preparatory” course if they were placed in it on entering the Department, as well as "English-Terminology" course,
- b) They have not registered for another course the lectures of which overlap with the English course.
Lower than 85% percentage of attendance (but not less than 25%) combined with active participation and task accomplishment can still offer students extra credits to be added to their final exam mark in the case of not fulfilling the minimum prerequisites to pass the course without the final exam.

Additionally, students practice on giving presentations in English, holding debates, writing e-mail messages, making reports or descriptions, etc. To this end, syntactical and grammatical structures, as well as other aspects of the language which are directly related to afore-mentioned academic and professional needs are revised. Is should be noted that any assignment and activity set is based on scientific and technical areas already covered in class and aims at consolidating and putting into practice any newly acquired knowledge.
Extensive use of audiovisual material is employed to further support the introduction, consolidation and practice of any language aspects and topics.
